Commission Process

The process to commission artwork is simple. Due to the detail that
goes into each piece of artwork John creates, it is impossible to create such drawings in one sitting. Therefore, John creates all of his artwork freehand using photographs.

If you will be showing your car at one of the shows John is scheduled to attend, please call or email in advance, and he can photograph your car at the show. If you live within approximately 120 miles of Cedar Falls, Iowa, John is willing to travel to your residence, or a favorite location for a special backdrop, to photograph the car in person. In this case, your commission includes the complete set of photos taken during the shoot. If meeting in person is not possible, or if you already have a favorite photo of your car, John will work directly off of the photo you provide.

Finished artwork is shipped via UPS or comparable carrier so that clients can track their product's whereabouts during shipping. Due to shipping constraints/costs and each person's individual tastes, commissioned artwork is delivered unframed.

It is solely the client's responsibility to frame and care for the artwork once it is delivered. All artwork produced on paper uses archival acid-free paper to ensure longevity, but exposure to humidity and sunlight can degrade the quality of an improperly cared-for drawing. It is recommended that a professional framing service frames each piece of artwork, and that a UV resistant glass is used. John's collection of artwork is framed using UV glass.

Completion times for each project vary, but an 8 ½ x 11 pencil drawing generally requires 45 to 55 hours. Classic cars with fine details and chrome take longer, while modern cars (excluding racecars) and muscle cars can take less time. Commission prices are listed on the Artwork Pricing page, and any pricing adjustments will be agreed upon prior to the start of each project.

All clients who commission artwork receive the original artwork, not a print or a copy, and no prints will be made of their commission for resale. If a reproduction is made, it will only be used for marketing purposes, like those displayed on this website.

Do you own or work for an automotive restoration or customizing shop and would like to see a finished car before you begin the tedious and expensive building process? John's abilities as an artist and his professional experience in Industrial Design allow him to create concept drawings, giving you a photo-realistic image of your project vehicle before any work has begun.

One such example can be seen in the gallery; the concept '72 Roadrunner was created for Streetworks in Waukesha, WI. The project car was to be lowered and receive custom wheels and an Air Grabber hood. A concept drawing also doubles as artwork for your office or as a thank-you perk to clients. If you're about to begin an expensive and time-consuming restoration or custom car build, commission a photo-realistic drawing of your project before you begin so you know you're efforts will meet your expectations.
